How is the gold price determined?

Gold is traded worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). The price in euros therefore depends on two things: the gold price in dollars and the euro/dollar exchange rate. Supply and demand from central banks, investors and the jewellery industry set the price; the market is open almost 24 hours a day, Monday to Friday.

Frequently asked questions about the gold price

What is the gold price per gram today?

The gold spot price per gram of fine gold (24 carat, 999.9) is shown at the top of this page. It is updated every few minutes based on the international market.

What is 14 carat gold worth per gram?

14 carat gold contains 58.5% pure gold. Its metal value per gram is the gold price per gram × 0.585. A buyer usually pays a percentage of that value.

Why do gold buyers pay less than the gold price?

The spot price is the wholesale price of fine gold. A buyer still has to melt and refine the gold and charges a margin, typically paying 85 to 96% of the metal value depending on fineness and quantity.

What is the difference between the bid and ask price?

The bid price is what the market pays for gold, the ask price is what the market sells it for. The difference is the spread. Buying back is usually based on the bid price, selling on the ask price.

How many grams are in a troy ounce?

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. Gold is traded internationally per troy ounce; divide the ounce price by 31.1035 to get the price per gram.
